The best horror novel I read last year was "World War Z : an oral history of the zombie war" by Max Brooks, which shares a similar premise. Sort of Studs Terkel meets George Romero. A collection of vignettes from different stages of the war against the undead, with the result that the author can throw in all kinds of cool little things and doesn't have to have a consistent story arc that hangs together completely from beginning to end.
