The Fear Is Here

Well, as of this writing, almost. But as of your reading, probably.

Thursday marks the launch of Fear of Girls 3, the story of two social outcasts who are SO far into their role-playing games they can't be bothered with, well... anything else.

You can catch it in three installments here on the YouTubes:

Chapter 1 · Chapter 2 · Chapter 3

If you are within driving distance of Minneapolis/St. Paul, there's a special premiere screening:

Riverview Theatre
3800 42nd Ave South
Minneapolis, MN
Dec 4th - 7pm / $10

All proceeds benefit that pillar of the Twin Cities film scene, The Minnesota Film and TV Board. They deserve some loving so go give them your bucks if you can. The line-up also features the work of my wonderful friends Jon Nowak, Andrew Hunt, and Jason Lausche. I sorely wish I was there, should be a great night.

They say never read your reviews, but in the nearly-three years Fear of Girls has been up on the web, we've garnered some doozies.

The best of comments after the cut:

There are several different types of commenters in that seething, oily noodle factory we call YouTube...

The Disbelievers
"It's a fake video. "
"Your moms a fake video."
"It's real in my heart."

The Haters
"First one was much better. He played Doug Douglason much geekier for that one. He sort of lost his character here somehow."

The Lovers
"That was hilarious. Good job, guys. I made a very similar film about a year ago, but oh well. Good job guys!
...I'd also like to add that your film is better than the one I made."

"I love this episode. I've seen a completely different side of Doug. Apparently he hates girls."

The Spammers
"In 1945 a girl came in a gret boat to america she was killed by a man cutting in the words "LALUALLATUKA" into her back.now that you have read this message she will come on a full moon and steal your soul. unless 1.you write this exact message in 3 other video comments."

The Liars
"dude i hunt with those guys"

The Ashamed
"f*ck...i have that dragon poster in my basement. Time to take it down."

The Grognards
"Any D&D veteran got to appreciate the care and effort that went into every detail of this production. The blackhaired woman's costume, for instance, is a direct replica of an illustration of a female thief in AD&D module G1. That non-player character will, as Gygax writes, at first cooperate with the players but then backstab them. CLASSIC use of a classic. Well done!"

The Nitpickers
"Um, one small error I think I've spotted, when the female gamer backstabbed him, she claimed he would be "surprised", however Krunk is a level 8 barbarian, and at level 2 a barbarian gets "uncanny dodge" (meaning he can't be flatfooted) and at level 5 "Improved Uncanny Dodge" (meaning he can't be flanked, which requires a second person anyways). So, mind explaining how a rogue of level 8, (BAB 6) with a sword of wounding (+2) needs only a 5 to hit him? That means AC of 13, which is way too low."

And of course, The Ultimate Truthtellers
"I despair for all of you who wrote comments"

-Tom, who has to go write "LALUALLATUKA" in three other video comments now.

I want my FoG3!

I have too many readers named Joe.

Maybe Ryan is waiting until after the premiere?

Or maybe YouTube can't handle that many gigs of nerdity.

Uploading as we speak. Chapter one has been uploading now just waiting for it to post.

SOON!

I'm shocked that no one noted the garb of Nosnra that Raymond wore in FoG2. Maybe it was way too obvious.

Good. Much shorter than expected and I'd like more esoteric nerdliness but good nonetheless.

I agree, funnier than FoG2. Now for the real dilemma. Doug Doug and Krunk have hit a chord. It's surprising how close this is to some of the pitch's I see. Dare I send it to an uninitiated (mundane) audience as an example of how not to do a presentation?

Oh, by the way, where did Doug Doug get that handsome, orange Weatherstone T-shirt?
# Posted By lenthemild | 12/4/08 9:18 PM
Every elite gamemaster *I* know has one of those.

Yes! That was great!

Oh, and I love the poster behind Doug Doug and Raymond. How'd you get it from your bedroom to the set, Tom?
# Posted By Søren | 12/4/08 11:05 PM
Dude, I just provide the t-shirts and the White Box. I can't take the chance my poster of Brom's "Lost Note" will get damaged in transit.

I'm looking forward to playing in a D.O.U.G. event at GenCon next year.

Actually, GenCon would be a great setting for FoG4. A sad little booth in the shadow of the WOTC castle, selling D.O.U.G. Doug holding a seminar for Elite Gamemasters who out-nerd him and rip his rules apart. Lotsa possibilities. :-)

mohogo.com is the bomb. In the classic sense of the term.

I went back to watch FoGs again tonight. The funny thing was the ad YouTube puts up at the bottom. It was:

"Search 50 million singles on Zoosk! Join Free! Flirt Now!"

Somehow having that show up over Krunk while they're talking about not selling out was too funny!
