The Original Status Update

Back in the days before there was Facebook, or Twitter, or blogging, if you wanted to let people know what you were up to, you had to WORK at it.

That's my dad, a little over 25 years ago, outside his family home near St. Cloud, Minnesota. His mom asked him to paint the place, he didn't quite finish.

That stunt landed him in the local newspaper in July of 1973. A month later the photo was included in a cover story in TIME magazine and eventually it become the title of a book by Peg Meier of photos reviewing Minnesota's seasonal past.

So if you wonder where I get my showmanship from, that gives you a pretty good idea.

Today is my Dad's birthday. It's hot where I am, Dad, but we don't have a lake here so I hope you'll go out in the boat for me.

Happy Birthday.

Love,
-Tom

Always loved your Dad, since I got a card with you guys in drag. He should be on a game show, shouldn't he?

There should've been a comma after the word "HOT."

A picture that's worth a thousand words! The perfect tribute to the man famous for turning five words into a thousand! Happy Birthday--a thousand times over!

As acorns don't fall far from tree, you've got quite a heritage to live up to, Tom. Congrats to your Pop on another year above ground. Plus, he got to see one of his acorns on the teevee!

Happy Birthday (a day late) JOE!!

How can we forget the inspiration and innovation? I'm reminded of the famous triptich of Joe Lommel, inscribed with sharpie on a set of kagan trays.

What about the parking meter? The door stop? The magnetic set of dice!
